I want to toss in a little story from cost crazy Sillycon Valley, the North end in Palo Alto. Things are actually cooling down, at one point it was not uncommon to have new moneyed people knock on the door and have your average (for the area) homeowner offered like $1,000,000 for their house. Other things which have been troublesome are the demolishing of perfectly good examples of well built houses (lathe and plaster, solid wood, etc) in favor on these mini or McMansions which tend to dominate the neighbors on either side. My story today, which has a basement theme is this: One guy was limited in the total floor space he could build by height restrictions so he decided to build downwards. He planned enough subbasements so that during the filling and curing of the foundation he had to run pumps 24/7 to keep the ground water from floating it up out of the ground, presumably the weight of the finished |
