I endure 80 plus MPH winds frequently in Alaska's winter, so I've adopted the idea that Florida's Dade County has: I intend to install rolling shutters on large fixed-pane windows in my vinyl sided house http://www.rollupshutter.com/technical/ Rolling shutters utilize extruded aluminum rails, two vertical guide rails and a horizontal bottom rail, in which the shutter rides and seats when deployed. The difficulty is in accomodating these rather substantial mechanisms adequately on an exterior wall that is clad in vinyl siding. I want to cut the siding back a few inches from the brick mold so as to install a cedar 2X6 against the OSB sheathing. The 2X6 would make a much better surface on which to mount this hardware than the window trim, and the occasional painting, re-glazing will be more easily affected.
