Furring vs Sistering joists on 125 yr old ceiling?

If 5/8" drywall is recommended for ceilings as hides deflection better, how much deflection can it hide from joist to joist, 16" o.c.? I'm working on a 125 year old Victorian house that has badly cracked plaster ceilings. On the ground floor an older carpenter & I sistered 2 x 8 joists to an already-demolished ceiling & put full blocking every 4', notching each piece of blocking to meet both old & new joists, as existing ceiling had no bridging & was moderately twisted. New 2 x 8's were not full 13' length uncut, but merely there to make level the ceiling, which had some sag & varied 1/2" from one joist to the next. This took a long time, though it will undoubtedly produce a stable drywall ceiling. My question is: should I do the same method of sistering joists on the 2nd floor ceilings, which had badly damaged plaster, or just slap drywall up, or try furring instead? |
