The heat loss for a given structure is of course the same irregardless of a high-mass or low mass floor (assuming the same insulation, windows, etc). This just means that the high-mass system will tend to cycle on and off less frequently (i.e. less short-cycling). There are simply more BTUs held in the mass and it takes longer for this heat to be shed through the building envelope. I believe that longer cycle time has been shown to have benefits for both the longevity and possibly the effeciency of both boilers and hot water heaters. |
