Cut the nails to remove the broken shingle. Another way is to split the broken shingle where the nails are, and then pull out the pieces. Trim the new shingle to fit with a razor knife or a plane, slide it up under the next course, and nail it off. The only trick involved is sliding it high enough to line up without sliding it so far that you split the shingle above it. One thing to check is that the new shingle is the same length (or slightly shorter) and thickness as the old shingle- if you try to drive a larger shingle into place, you'll just split the top course, and then you can replace the whole wall, one at a time.
