Is the wall currently insulated? Has it been insulated at any time during its life? In a climate subject to prolonged cold periods, many uninsulated older walls "work" because of the continual heat flow from the interior to the exterior. This heat flow has the unintended effect of keeping the bulk of the wall relatively warm. If you insulate with R10 styrofoam you'll likely cause the wall to be much colder than its historical condition, and probably all of the masonry will then be outside the dew point of the assembly. Of course you will have the opportunity to restrict the flow of air and vapour into the wall - so the benefits of doing this may balance out the effects of the wall being colder. Are you certain that the existing wall has adequate durability to survive in the new colder and more frost-susceptible environment? -- Peter James Ottawa, Ontario . |
