By definition there is an average percentage, but whether your builder figures his markup that way or whether you want to use an "average" builder is another matter. If you're of the belief that you can keep from "getting taken" by trying to dictate what the builder's profit percentage will be...ouch. You're going to lose a lot of good contractors that way, and it won't scare off someone from taking advantage of you. Generally I'd advise doing your homework on references and recommendations, have as complete a set of drawings and specifications as possible (prepared by a pro who knows how to nail down details for |
