Guessing the following is what you're referring to as "my post below": HI! we have a contract to buy a house. We had it inspected yesterday by a very professional gentleman from a reputable firm here in Chicago. One major issue popped out: cracks in the mortar and misaligned bricks on a corner of the outside wall where the 3rd floor floor meets the wall. Affected area is12X4 in. I believe it is a frame house, since the rear wall has vinil siding. It is an attached town house, with one wall shared with the other unit. Inspector noted that this could be a sign of a structural defect, maybe a joist pushing against its pocket. We like the house very much, and wish that the defect was not there. Inspector's suggestion is to hire a structural engineer. My question is: how bad can the problem be? As I understand it, the engineer will write a report where he/she suggests possible causes to the _visible_ defect. What |
