Where can a newly-homeless person sleep at night ?

I know someone in New York City in a precarious housing situation where he might get evicted and become homeless any day now. He's not broke but he's not currently employed, which makes it difficult to get a room for rent. In case he ends up having to leave with no place to go (and no one willing to let him sleep on their living room couch), where can someone like him go just to sleep? It's common knowledge that "homeless shelters" are crowded, dangerous and dirty, so that's probably not a good option. Can he sleep on a park bench, or is that not allowed? And if it's allowed, what happens when the weather starts getting cold? Where can he go then? Do they allow people to sleep in train stations (e.g., Penn Station) after certain hours? . |
