They can in certain circumstances... (see bottom of message) The landlord can choose whoever they want for an apartment, but they can only reject someone based on their references or their credit ratings. Personality/respect of other tenants is included. They cannot REJECT someone if it goes against the human rights code... which includes discrimination against someone whether or not they work (students/unemployed/self employed etc). I have a good job but I HATE it when landlords start asking me where I work and other personal information when I'm still trying to figure out over the phone if I'm even remotely interested in the place! Sometimes I want to reply "I work for an engineering company, where do you work?" A credit check will show if the tenant is responsible when it comes to paying bills on time/knowing what they can afford. Do you think they want to drive their credit rating into the dirt by renting a place they can't |
