I've had warm, sunny weather in the winter in Malta. It's halfway between Sicily and Africa. Sliema is probably the most convenient transport hub for the aged, cheap Maltese buses if you don't have a car with you. Valletta has better connections but is not so easy to stay in. There are a few beaches on the island, but not many as the island is basically a lump of limestone. There won't be many on the beach at that time -- it's cooler than Egypt, if warmer than most of Europe. The locals do not have a relaxed attitude to topless sunbathing. There's a lot of history on the island and fine buildings - which is more my thing. WW11 and the knights of St.John. St.Paul's landing. High, quiet Mdina. The lsle of Gozo. The local language is more difficult than some, having few European connections, but the long period of British rule has left most people with good English. -- Andrew Nightingale of Cambridge (UK) . |
