I recall a supposedly "friendly" game between Aston Villa and Glasgow Rangers some thirty years ago. The Rangers fans got well oiled in Brum city centre beforehand. A priest of my acquaintance, an Anglican as it happened, got a gobfull of "no popery" abuse. After the match was abandoned at half time because of crowd trouble, the mayhem resumed in the city centre, with the local constabulary kept at work until the evening. Not a good day for avisit to the City Museum or the Barber Institute! Alan Harrison . |
