a few impressions of Rhodes

Just back from a week in Rhodes. I've only been in Greece before twenty years ago for a couple of days, on my way to/from Turkey. I was mainly interested in seeing the mediaeval sites linked to the Knights of St John, so we went first to Rhodes Town, then Lindos, then Monolithos, then back to Rhodes. I found myself comparing Rhodes to both Turkey and Malta in different ways. I've been all over Turkey many times and know a fair bit of Turkish; spent two weeks in Malta a few years ago. Sites and views were as in the guidebooks. Physically, the place is very well documented. Monolithos is just as spectacular as they say. I don't know much Greek (and most of what I do know is from Plato's time) but didn't need to use my dictionary or phrasebook at all. Even Malta presented more linguistic problems. The whole place is geared to dealing with British tourists; signs are mostly in both |
