I tend to agree with Barbara about Matera, interesting if you have the time. We made this trip a few years ago. Drove east from Salerno on the A3 to Potenza (don't bother going into the city) then continued on the secondary roads going through Gravina in Puglia, Altamura, Santeramo in Colle, Gioia in Colle, then to Alberobello. Took us most of the day, and we got lost several times, but it was a very interesting drive. We stayed in Alberobello overnight, then explored the town the following morning. It's interesting, but not worth more than one day's visit. If you are in that area, the Castel del Monte is worth a side trip. If time permits, Lecce is also quite interesting. I would definitely go back for another visit to that region. I'd also avoid Bari and Brindisi.. Sounds like a good trip, good luck on your planning...
