I can't imagine that in most other large > cities. Yup, I consider DC a town, and not even a very big one at that. Considering it's world importance it's fairly small - and even somewhat provincial. Of course that can be considered part of it's "charm"... It's a "one horse" town (the horse being government); unlike other US cities DC never had any kind of industrial base and the great waves of immigration that transformed other places never had much of an impact (until recently, and that has taken place primarily in the VA and MD suburbs). Even today it's a somewhat class - conscious and class - stratified place... |
