As an example: the steam-hauled Deauville Express of the 30s covered the Paris Saint Lazare-Deauville journey in 1hr58 minutes. That's the same schedule as today... One could also quote the loco-hauled Aquitaine Paris-Bordeaux (from Austerlitz, via Orleans) that covered the 580-so km in 3hr50 minutes (that's only 47 minutes more than the equivalent TGV, for the path of the TGV south of Tours is exactly the same as the old Aquitaine and Etendard). |
