Orsanmichele Restored Statues

I'm not sure why the powers-that-be decided to send newly restored sculptures by di Nani, Ghiberti, and del Verrocchio from the Orsanmichele to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC for a temporary exhibit, but I'm really grateful. The wall text said that the three sculptures have been out of view for restoration work since 1984. The results are amazing. The restoration reveals spectacular detail, and the bronze of the Ghiberti's St. Matthew glows so brilliantly, it almost looks molten. Visitors to Florence won't have to wait too much longer to see what we Washingtonians are already enjoying. The exhibit will end in late December at which time the sculptures will go home, and the Orsanmichele itself will be reopened. Does anyone know how the National Gallery snagged this exhibit? There's no indication that these sculpture have been making an extended tour. |
