Casey, within living memory Spain and Portugal were both fascist dictatorships. Within living memory, Ireland had a third-world economy and the role of the church was firmly rooted in the contitution. My personal feeling is that the differences of Turkey are being blown out of all proportion. I've never been there and have no particular axe to grind. The few Turks I've known are ordinary Joes going about their business and bringing up their families. I definitely do not see the "Muslimness" of Turkey as a reason to refuse it access to the EU. As a member of Nato, it clearly sees itself as being closer to the "West" and Europe than to the Middle Eastern countries. That would seem patently obvious to me. I would think that 1) Europe has already been built on diversity 2) Europe has already enabled a handful of countries overcome major political and economic hurdles. So why not Turkey?
