I think different people learn language differently. I need to see the word written down. As a sound only, I can't make sense of it, can't catch hold of it. Then I recycle the written word back into sound. But I am very unmusical, an Eye person rather than an Ear person. So, with languages, I am much better at reading than understanding speech.
