According to what I've read, the story of jeans is a two-part story. The choice of cloth came about because the people panning for gold had garments ill-suited for the working conditions. Messrs Levi and Strauss took the cloth de Nimes that they had ordered for use as tent material and fashioned pants. The "jeans" name came about because the crates in which the cloth de Nimes was shipped to San Francisco came out of the port of Genoa.
