If you like beautiful countryside, I highly recommend heading out westward from London. Whether or not you spend a day in Bath (worth it), all the areas southwest from there are gorgeous. Such as the drive between Cheddar, Wells, and Glastonbury. And each of those places are swell themselves, Cheddar being a nice (though touristic village), Wells with its impressive cathedral and environs, and Glastonbury with its old abbey ruins. If you want super-picturesque villages, visit Lacock and Castle Combe east of Bath. If you head to Bath along the A36, you'll pass Stonehenge. Also, I can recommend a drive into southeastern Wales and a drive north along the Wye river to Tintern abbey.
