"They won't stop flying any time soon. But ultimately air tickets have to get more expensive or their costs have to go down in some manner. Or, most likely, a little of both." The major US carriers are getting squeezed on both domestic and international routes. Many European and Asian airlines are heavily subsidized by their governments, and can afford to charge low prices on the major transoceanic routes. When the US carriers are forced to compete with the prices of subsidized foreign carriers, it cuts their profits to the bone. (Great for consumers but lousy for the industry.) On domestic routes, Southwest and Jet Blue only fly the most lucrative routes, and charge reasonable prices on those routes that undercut the major airlines' attempts to price gouge (saturday night stay requirements, expensive one-way tickets, etc.).
