TV and FM signals don't really propagate in a straight line. They follow the curvature of the earth to an extent, especially well across the sea. (E.g. I've picked up British FM stations on the German North Sea coast south of the Danish border) This is also why TV reception is very likely possible between Anglia and Holland.
