I found buying the 'ten pack' the most cost effective public transportation option in Paris this May; also so in Madrid. Both stays were for six days. Note; in Madrid this is issued on a single card; the turnstile subtracts each ride electronically and displays the number of remaining rides left on the card; therefore no trouble in letting someone else use it by handing it back over the barrier; unlike unlimited use per day type cards. The Madrid metro was the best I've seen so far in the EU; amazingly clean and I never waited more than 5 minutes for a train; more often the next arrived in 2-3 minutes so platform crunch never developed.
