It seems like a scam or a mistake, but it's for real. I'll try to explain it: 1. Ryanair's costs are much lower than "traditional" airlines. They make several flights per day with each plane, spend as little time as possible on the ground before moving on, don't serve a meal and have minimal crews (usually just one flight attendant). 2. Ryanair figures that getting paid for a seat on a flight is just one possible way to make money. When people fly on your airline, you can sell them food, drinks, etc. and make a good profit from that, and you can try to rent them hotel rooms and rental cars and charge commissions. So if you have unsold seats, rather than let them remain empty and get nothing from them, it's better to fill them even at a very low price since then you can always try to sell the people who fill those seats the other items and services. |
