You can choose hotels in any arrondissment with the advice of www.jack-travel.com. I have stayed at Grand Hotel des Balcons and the Hotel Delavigne, next door to each other on Rue Casimir Delavigne. This is in the 6th and a short walk from the Odéon métro station. They run around 100 euros, breakfast extra. Both are clean and comfortable and give you rooms facing the street. I found the bed a little more comfortable at Balcons but Delavigne has in-room safes. Lots of restaurants in the area too.
