If you "boil" it in too much water, it not only tends to get mushy, but you drain all the nutrients away in the excess water. If you try to "steam" it using only a pot and lid, the high starch content makes it very prone to scorching (which does not taste very good). A rice steamer, on the other hand, may be turned on and forgotten unitl it's done - the temperature is controlled, and a timer turns the heat off at the right moment for it to absorb the remaining liquid without scorching.
