when I was there, it was just after one of the hurricanes, so landing the plane was a thing of contrast, beautiful beaches, blue tarped covered damaged homes..... we didnt have much time to explore as we needed a connecting flight, so we mainly did San Juan and that was it, on foot for the most part, cabs filling in some of the time..... to me, San Juan did not feel any different than being in just about any north eastern US downtown urban area, aside from the architechture and warmer weather. I wouldnt go back to san juan, but the rest of the island looked absolutely amazing, and we have kicked around the idea of going and staying with some friends who recently moved back, but it doesnt have the "carribean" feel, maybe because I go on vacation to be in a different culture, etc.... someone else can help you a lot more, but if you want to know how to see the capital city in 6 hours, I am your guide......
