Just returned from Playa del Carmen. This was a very nice place to stay. We were on 5th Avenue at Hotel Maya Bric, very nice central location, very inexpensive. The food on 5th Avenue was hit or miss for being so pricey, but the laid back bars and beautiful beaches more than made up for it. And a quick burrito and cerveza or relaxing massage was very inexpensive one block back on 10th Avenue. It depends on your objectives. As Brian K noted, Cancun is like being in Daytona for Spring Break. Beautiful water, but you won't know you are in Mexico. As well as Playa del Carmen, we stayed two nights in the inland Yucatan town of Valladolid and stopped in Chichen Itza, a Mayan village with a spider monkey reserve, and Coba. Very impressive!
