Generally, my shift, with an 80 cubic foot tank is 4 lbs or less. Thanks to a lot of years of diving, my consumption is pretty low. It's unusual for me to surface with less than 1,000 psi. That said, I do pretty much as you suggest. I start a bit heavy and end a bit light. I weight more for the end of the dive than for the beginning. Swimming up while just a bit heavy is not a problem. Staying down during a safety or deco stop, when a bit too light, can be annoying. I descend easily at the beginning of the dive, ascend easily at the end of the dive and am damned near spot on for pretty much all of the dive. Your analysis is nice, but there's something not being taken into account somewhere evidenced by the fact that people, including me, are doing what I describe without finning to stay up while at the heavy end and not holding |
