I enjoy both kinds of vacations. When I do a land vacation I do it entirely on my own, and stay off the beaten track, and really get involved in the land, the people, etc. Getting ready to go to the Dominican republic, and definitely trying to see things other than touristy (though some days of beach are inevitable). But a cruise is a very relaxing and fun experience. I like to use it to see a number of places which I would not otherwise see and get the impression of the island. I will say I don't do the group tours on the islands, I don't do most of the shopping, and I do get off on my own. But I also enjoy the relaxation and nightlife of the ship between times, and not having to pack and unpack, and to go from place to place. Juile Backpacker AND Cruiser.
