I recently approached a local credit union about a home equity loan to
purchase a used car. They told me I could borrow 75% of the assessed value
of my home for no fees, closing costs, etc. Assessed value is what the
city/town values it at for tax purposes. If I wanted more than this, I would
have to pay for an appraisal. Because it's a pretty low loan to value (LTV),
the rate is very attractive.
