Original flooring in 100 yr old house?

We have nice hardwood floors in the main floor dining and living rooms. Upstairs the previous owner has put in modern carpet (think of the beige carpet you find en masse in condos, townhouses, subdivisions, etc.). Our house is almost 100 years old so the carpet does not go well with the look of the home. We want to put in hardwood floors upstairs, so out of curiousity, I lifted the carpet up in one of the bedroom closets and there is wood underneath already. Its been painted a dark brown colour, and there's no gaps in between the boards, and the baseboards go right down to this flooring. It looks like it may have been the original floor in the house, but until we rip the carpets all up (we're keeping them installed until we sell them so the person buying them can get a better idea of the condition of the wood underneath) we won't have a solid idea of the condition of the wood underneath.
